During 2008 five (5) triker friends namely: Mike Smith, Deon Slabbert, André  Muller, Walter van der Walt and Phillip Chetty came together to chat about open the first trike club in South Africa. Mike Smith took the lead to get the necessary approval from the national biking fraternity and as well as international approval to open the club called The Knights of the Third Wheel Social Club.

According to the first Constitution developed and written, the following ranking titles were agreed upon:

THE FIRST KNIGHT – President

THE SECOND KNIGHT – Vice President

THE SCRIBE – Secretary

THE COIN COLLECTOR – Treasurer

THE ROAD KNIGHT – Road Captain

THE KNIGHT OF ARMS – Sergeant at Arms

THE SPEAKER – PRO

These original ranking titles were never used but only the normal ranking titles like: President, Vice President and PRO.

The club was officially established in August 2008 with Mike Smith as the President, Walter van der Walt as the Vice President, André Muller as the PRO, Phillip Chetty and Deon Slabbert were Members. Because of the limited key holders and members, the Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at Arms and Road Captain were never appointed. Around November/December of 2008, Alan Pretorius, his wife, son and sister-in-law joined the club as new members. The club then consisted of six (6) key holders for just over a year.

The Knights of the Third Wheel was registered as a Social Club (SC) until 2023 when an application for approval was handed in to the Local Presidents Council (ECPC) to change from a SC (Social Club) to a TC (Trike Club). Approval was granted. 

Sadly at the end of 2009 Mike Smith passed away and Walter van der Walt took over as the President until 2017. During 2010 Phillip Chetty resigned from the club and joined DOLPHINS MCC leaving only five (5) key holders. A few years after leaving the club, Phillip Chetty passed away.

Since 2016 the club exploded to a point where the club consisted of thirty-two (32) key holders. As time goes by, some decided to resign from the club and some passed away, leaving a current total of eighteen (18) key holders. In total the club is currently thirty-seven (37) members strong.

During 2017, Walter van der Walt indicated that he is resigning as President and leaving the club. Voting took place and Alan Pretorius is voted in as President, Deon Slabbert as Vice-President. Later in 2017, a Secretary and Road Captain was elected. A Sergeant at Arms was only elected during 2023. During 2025 the Sergeant at Arms resigned and the position was filled.

During 2020, the committee have decided to change the rank of the PRO to The Knight of Events (Events Coordinator). This position was filled during 2020.

After a discussion in 2023 the committee decided to divert back to the original ranks as indicated in the constitution of 2008.

Mainly the club only consists of trikes that are either home built, manufactured or converted from a motorcycle to a trike (for example: Harley-Davidson and Honda Goldwing etc.) The club is the only trike club in South Africa and is currently located in the city of Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.
